Surcharges in EU Road Freight: What They Are & How They Work

During European road transport, surcharges apply when additional services are required beyond the base freight cost. Some special surcharges must be confirmed with the carrier, while standard surcharges typically include the following (exact fees may vary based on time, date, carrier pricing adjustments, etc.; please refer to the platform for current rates):

I. Scheduled Loading/Unloading Fee

Groupage services generally offer a 1–3 working day loading/unloading time window, while some dedicated truck services can schedule by the hour.

If loading/unloading must be completed within a specific hourly window (e.g., 9:00 AM–12:00 PM), a full truckload (FTL) service is required. Groupage trucks handle multiple shipments and can only be booked for a full working day window (e.g., 1st–3rd). FTL offers faster transit but at a higher price. Exact fees depend on distance and vehicle type.

For scheduling on a specific day only, you may choose the "Phone Appointment" service (e.g., Cargoboard phone appointment for loading: €7.5/shipment). After booking, the carrier will contact the shipper to confirm the date (no specific hourly window guaranteed).

Special Cases:

  Kuehne+Nagel offers 2-hour delivery window and 4-hour delivery/pickup windows, costing €20–€110/shipment.

FedEx provides Saturday delivery at €22/shipment; service availability must be confirmed with the carrier in advance.

II. Loading Equipment Usage Fee

Tail Lift Fee: Typically ranges from €80 to €240 per shipment. Final pricing is confirmed after you choose a service.

Forklift Fee: Carriers generally do not provide forklifts; the shipper/receiver is expected to arrange equipment. If unavailable, fees must be negotiated and confirmed with the carrier.

It's a must to verify loading/unloading conditions at private addresses. If no equipment is available, corresponding services must be selected. Some carriers (e.g., Cargoboard groupage) offer free tail lift services but impose weight (≤1000 kg) and size (≤240×120×230 cm) limits per item. Exceeding 1000 kg incurs an €80 per vehicle charge.

III. Hazardous Goods Transport Fee

Select the "Hazardous Goods Transport" option and provide required details, then the system will automatically calculate surcharges.

Fees vary by carrier and hazard class. Examples:

  Cargoboard: starting from €5/shipment.

Kuehne+Nagel & Raben: automatically calculated based on cargo data.

  FedEx: €100/shipment.

IV. Other Surcharges

Insurance Surcharge: Under the European CMR Convention, carriers must provide basic insurance, but this may not cover high-value goods. Additional insurance can be purchased via the platform (provided by the carrier’s own cargo insurance or partner insurers), starting from €6/shipment and increasing with declared value. You can enter your cargo value for an exact quote.

Waiting Time Fee: Carriers typically allow 15 minutes to 2 hours of free waiting time during loading/unloading. Beyond this, fees range from €65 to €160 per hour. Refer to carrier terms on the platform.

Failed Pickup Fee: If a pickup fails due to client reasons, the client bears the cost—generally 75% of the order fee. Raben charges 50% within Germany and 35% elsewhere. We need to check exact fees with the carrier.

Interception/Cancellation Fee: Free if canceled before customer services confirm your order. Within 24 hours after confirmation: contact support to check potential fees. After dispatch or during transit: 75%–175% of the order fee, depending on the stage.

Private Address Handling Fee: Kuehne+Nagel charges €9/shipment for loading at private addresses.

Address Correction Fee: FedEx charges €9/shipment for re-delivery due to incorrect address.

Declared Value Surcharge (FedEx): For shipments exceeding standard insurance liability limits, a fee of €0.92 per 100USD of declared value applies.

Data Discrepancy Fee: Pay the price difference based on the order amount(e.g., due to incorrect dimensions/weight).

Redelivery Fee (Raben): If the first delivery attempt fails, a second delivery incurs a fee—50% of the order fee within Germany, 35% elsewhere.

Overnight Delay Fee: In dedicated transport, if delayed loading(for shipper's reason) causes missed delivery timelines and requires rescheduling for the next day, an additional €200–€500 overnight fee may apply (separate from waiting time charges).
