Hundreds of Accidents as Germany Hit by Fresh Bout of Winter Weather

Heavy snowfall and freezing rain disrupted traffic across large parts of Germany on Monday, with hundreds of accidents reported across the country as drivers struggled on icy roads.

Police reported 97 road accidents in the eastern state of Thuringia within eight hours.

Frankfurt Airport, Germany's busiest, canceled 79 of 1,035 scheduled flights. Winter service crews worked around the clock, with de-icing operations continuing throughout the day, airport officials said.

Deutsche Bahn, the national railway, reported delays and cancellations on major routes, including Berlin-Hamburg and lines around Stuttgart and Frankfurt.

In Baden-Wurttemberg's Heilbronn district, at least 15 trucks got stuck overnight in snow on a connector between the A6 and A81 highways near Stuttgart. The route was temporarily closed before reopening.

Near Nuremberg, a man skidded in his car on an icy road and ended up in the front garden of a church, crashing into the steps of the building. Rescue workers took the 34-year-old driver to hospital with minor injuries.

According to the police, there have been no major accidents in the capital so far. The Berliner Stadtreinigung’s (BSR) winter service is gritting important routes, including cycle lanes, the company said. However, heavy rain has washed away some of the wet salt from the roads. In addition, no de-icing agents are being used on side streets or on many cycle paths and pavements. This means that these areas are extremely slippery.

The weather is not set to improve for the time being. The weather service expects further snowfall in many parts of Germany during the course of the day, which will then gradually ease, and further frosty weather.

Due to the ongoing winter snowstorm and icy road conditions, ground transportation in Germany and neighboring countries is facing significant challenges. We anticipate short-term delays across European trucking deliveries—particularly on domestic routes within Germany and cross-border corridors. Our partner carriers are actively coordinating capacity and prioritizing safe operations.
